For
nearly a half century, Iota Lambda Chapter has honored one (or
in rare cases two) of its own as Alpha Man of the Year. The recipients
to date are listed below at left. Over the years, the
specific criteria have varied, but in all cases the award has
been intended to recognize Brothers whose contributions to the
Chapter and/or community at large have distinguished them among
distinguished Alpha men. Currently, the Alpha Man of the Year
is selected by a committee of former Alpha Men of the Year,
who are able to participate in the process. Within the 1990s,
the criteria listed below at right were established
to give a more formal framework to aid the selection process.
In a few years, the committee was unable to make a selection.
This is not intended as a negative reflection upon our active
members. Rather, it may be in part a reflection of changing times
when the most distinguished service may have been given by a primary
office holder and therefore judged "part of the job",
or by one who has previously received the award. To this date,
whether by custom or by the imposition of a higher standard of
excellence, no former recipient of the award has been selected
a second time. In some years, former recipients of the Alpha Man
of the Year award (or others in the Chapter) have been selected
to receive an award for "Distinguished Service" or "Alpha
Spirit", separate from the Man of the Year recognition.

Criteria
For
general information and as reference for
the annual selection process, the following
are the current criteria established
by Iotal Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Inc., for the Alpha Man of the
Year Award.
Article Callis: (5 pts)
-Minimum
of three years financial member in Iota
Lambda
(grounded and rotted in the knowledge of
the Fraternity)
Article
Chapman: (20 pts)
-Contributions
to Community service beyond professional
job (volunteer)
-Leadership
positions held/projects implemented on behalf
of chapter
-Connections
with state, regional and national governance
of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
-Contributions
to the reclamation efforts of our local
chapter.
-New/creative
(Kuumba) influence to chapter initiative.
-Team-Building
Spirit (Does the Brother personify "There
Goes An Alpha Man?")
