ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC., CELEBRATING AFRICAN AMERICAN
HERITAGE AND CULTURE

The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Iota Lambda Indianapolis Alumni Chapter, and surrounding Chapters, welcome you to our exhibit at the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration 2003. We hope you will take a moment to enter our display, view our exhibit, and talk to our Fraternity Brothers. To enhance your enjoyment of your visit with us, here are a few words of introduction and explanation.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the first Greek letter college fraternity founded by and for African American men. The Fraternity has been interracial since the mid-20th Century. The seven remarkable men who founded the Fraternity on December 4, 1906, were scholars at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Iota Lambda Chapter at Indianapolis, Indiana, was chartered in April 1922, to include students at Indiana, Purdue, DePauw, and Butler universities. The chapter was set up by Brother Fairfax of Ohio University and Brother Powell of Tau Chapter. The Charter members and officers were Brother Morris Taylor, president; Brother Walker, Vice-president; Brother Clay Johnson, secretary; Brother S.A. Furniss, treasurer. Other charter members were Brothers Burbridge, Gore, Averitte Corley, Minus Woodruff, and Matthews.

The gateway to our booth is formed by two, Egyptian obelisks, each displaying the Greek letters Alpha Phi Alpha. This symbolizes that while we share educational traditions with Greek letter fraternities and sororities, we are grounded in African and African American culture. Once inside we offer you some colorful glimpses of Fraternal life on three illuminated display stands. Here you can view Alpha Phi Alpha in the Community, Convention, Education, Fellowship, Youth Activities, and at Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration and the Circle City Classic. The Sphinx, symbol of the fraternity, is outlined against a stylized backdrop of pyramids and moonlit sky, in a banner created for this event. A video display will offer selected experiences of Alpha in sight and sound throughout the weekend. And, Iota Lambda Chapter joins our General Organization and many fellow chapters on the World Wide Web at http://www.iotalambda.org. If you will exit via the other side of the booth, we have additional information about our organization and programs. We hope you will enjoy your visit.
